hite cliffs that runs along its course, stand the ruins of a formidable medieval castle. The \i Chateau-Gaillard\i0 was built in 1197 by King Richard the Lionheart of England in order to defend his lands in Normandy from French ambitions. In spite of it
s cunning design, to which the double enceinte and powerful keep still bear witness today, the castle was taken by King Philip Augustus of France in 1204.\par
